Our Chips are King
Just when you thought that things couldn’t get any better, we’ve made yet another improvement to our fantastic Fish Factory menu.
We have recently introduced our King Handcut Chips as we want to treat our customers like royalty. Below is the process from selection to perfection:
(1) First of all we select the finest King Edward potatoes;
(2) Only once the potatoes have passed our strict quality control test, do they get promoted to the peeling station;
(3) Then the potatoes are delicately peeled, ensuring that all the vitamins (next the skin) are retained, which makes them more healthy;
(4) Once they are checked again, they are given the chop – in our rustic chunky style, fit for a King;
(5) The King chips are then deep-fried in the freshest fine groundnut oil for ultimate crispyness;
(6) Then, once they are given the taste test, they are plated for you to enjoy. YUM!
Some interesting facts about the British chip!
• Did you know that a portion of chips contains less fat than a prawn mayonnaise sandwich?
• A portion of chips counts towards one of you your 5-a-day! It contains a third of the recommended daily amount of vitamin C.

Proto Restaurant Group are recycling with Greenstar
The soon-to-be Fish Factory in Littlehampton has secured a one year contract with Greenstar Waste Services which means we will be recycling plastic, bottles and cardboard. Greenstar are responsible for the removal, reprocessing and disposal of over 1.4 million tonnes of waste and recyclables each year.
Recycling is headline news today, as we hear about celebrities’ ‘unwanted’ clothes being recycled in a ‘From bin bags to glad rags’ campaign launched by Camden Council and TRAID (Textile Recycling for Aid and International Development), a charity based in Brighton. Click here for the full story. Old designer clothes from stars such as Emma Thompson’s Prada jacket and Ridley Scott’s hat from Robin Hood are being used to demonstrate to residents in Cambden how sewing and needlework can revamp old clothes. TRAID has helped prevent over 1,000 tonnes of unwanted textiles from filling landfill sites in London.
As well as Proto’s recycling scheme, there are a number of other areas where we are helping to save the planet, such as fitting energy efficient light bulbs in all of the public areas in all of our restaurants. So you can polish your halo in the knowledge that you are eating at Proto’s planet friendly restaurants. Phone 01903 227780 for Food Restaurant, and 01903 207123 for Fish Factory reservations.

Matron Sparsis helps Carry on Doctor team to raise over £800 for Chestnut Tree House
You may remember a special weekend a few months back – August 22nd/23rd to be precise – when Worthing played host to some amazing sunshine and tropical temperatures. This weekend also happened to be the weekend of Worthing International Birdman 2009! And if you didn’t know, our very own Andrew Sparsis was part of the Carry on Doctor team and helped them to raise over £800 for Chestnut Tree House – whoppie!

FIVE TV
We have a special treat for you this Friday night at 8pm on Channel 5 in the name of Brighton Beach Patrol. It seems that the show couldn’t find enough action in Brighton, so they had to find more adventure in sunny Worthing! Andrew Sparsis gives some top advice to aspiring chef
It seems that Masterchef is gripping the nation and that cooking is the latest craze – which is a good thing!
If you didn’t know about the Rotary Young Chef Competition, where have you been? This national competition (sponsored by Filippo Berio Olive Oil) is aimed at schools although any student under 18 may enter, and is designed to encourage kids to demonstrate their culinary skills in menu and budget planning, sourcing and purchasing ingredients, hygienically cooking and serving a healthy two or three course meal for two.
The Worthing heat is being judged by our very own Andy Sparsis and Stuart who is the head chef at The Fish Factory. This competition is in it’s second year and the next round is on Wednesday 4th November. After this, the winners and some runners up from the District event will go forward to a Regional event and from there to a prestigious National final.
All we can say is: Watch out Masterchef!

Cooking is great fun!

Good to see that young ladies are still cooking too!

The whole evening was sponsored by Carpenter Box Accountants, and organised by the Worthing Herald. Louise James and Vaidas Butkus picked up their award from councillor Paul Yallop who represented the sponsors Worthing Borough Council. You can see Louise and Vaidas’ giving their winner’s speech by clicking here.

Worthing Business Award
We are crossing our fingers for tomorrow’s Worthing Business Awards. We have been shortlisted for the Healthy Workplace Award 2009. We have some tough competition though, as we are up against Worthing High School.
As you know, the Proto Restaurant Group takes health and safety very seriously. Back in July we announced that we had been featured in Gordon Brown’s Government Magazine, Chartered Institute of Environmental Health’s Magazine called “Trainer’s Exchange”. Trainer’s Exchange is a government magazine that is distributed to all the Councils in England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales. Proto have been selected for being committed to managing one of the best trained and committed teams in the country due to our own in-house training school for all our restaurant staff. You can read the rest that blog entry by clicking here.
We wish all of Worthing’s shortlisted businesses the best of British at tomorrow’s award evening.
