This week, we want to tell you all about Worthing Bowls Centre because for the past nine years, they have supported The Fish Factory in Worthing and this is our way of saying a HUGE Thank You!

Worthing Bowls Centre are key suppliers of equipment and clothing for the fast growing sport, lawn bowls.

So where did lawn bowls originate?

Many historians believe the game of bowls developed from the Egyptians who used to play skittles with round stones; others maintain it originated from a similar game played by Roman soldiers.

Whatever its origin, lawn bowls has spread across the world and versions of the game are played in places like Italy (Bocce), Denmark (Bolle), France (Boules) and even Polynesia (Ula Maika). The growth of the British Empire ensured its spread to places like Australia and New Zealand. The oldest bowls green still played on is in Southampton, England, where records date back to 1299 A.D.

Bowls is high on the list of most played and most watched sport in many countries. Far from being a sport for O.A.P.s, bowling is enjoyed by thousands of young people throughout the country.

The English Bowling Association (Bowls England) was founded in 1903 and organises numerous competitions from club to national level while World Bowls, based in Scotland, aims to provide leadership and governance of the sport and encourage its growth internationally. The English Indoor Bowling Association (EIBA) is responsible for the indoor side of the game.

What does Worthing Bowls Centre sell?

Worthing Bowls Centre sells everything and anything you would ever need to take up this fast growing sport. Anything you buy on their website comes with free delivery within the UK.

Andy Sparsis and Tessa Beck, Birdman Competition Winner

Andy Sparsis and Tessa Beck, Birdman Competition Winner

More than 30 youngsters rose to the challenge to come up with creative and colourful costume designs during their stay at Worthing Hospital’s children’s ward. Andrew Sparsis, owner of Proto Restaurant Group came up with the idea for the children to design a costume for him for when he jumps at the Birdman on Sunday 15th August.

The winning costume designed by eight year old Tessa Beck, was a cheerleader costume from the blockbuster movie, High School Musical.  Mr Sparsis is now in the process of having a cheerleader costume made to his size along with a wig and pom poms which he plans to wear when he takes part in the Birdman competition in aid of the Love your Hospitals charity.

Mr Sparsis said he is really looking forward to doing the jump this year as for the last two years he has helped out with other teams, so he is hoping to get a lot of support from doing the jump.  Mr Sparsis hopes to raise £2000 for the Love your Hospitals Charity which supports both Worthing and Southlands Hospitals and St Richard’s in Chichester”.

So come on everyone, dig deep and support Mr Sparsis in Birdman! Click here NOW to go to his Just Giving Page.

English Bowling Association - EBA Bowling

You know that summer is here when the EMA Bowling Championships come to Worthing.

The Men’s National Championships have been taking place underneath our noses since Saturday 8th August and run until Saturday 22nd August. In the middle of all this action is the National Mixed Fours Finals which takes place on 15th and 16th August.

We love it when the championships take place in Worthing! We serve over 3000 people a week in our fish restaurant – The Fish Factory. In fact, we have looked after all the bowlers for the last seven years. Here’s a few interesting facts …

  • Did you know that Bowls England is the capital of lawn bowling and is based in Worthing, near Steyne Gardens (virtually opposite The Fish Factory)?
  • Bowling is becoming trendy for youngsters! More and more kids are getting into this sport. So if you want to be a leader, and not a follower, you know what to do …
  • Fish served from The Fish Factory is the best food for bowlers – all those amino acids help the brain to function and help you to win – however old you are!
  • So if you fancy taking up a new hobby, or need some gentle exercise – log onto: www.bowlsengland.com and your life could take a turn for the better! Don’t forget to spoil yourselves afterwards with our brand new spoil menu which has a Japanese twist this time!
